curtain was raised on the Stratford ArtsHouse in April 2014, following an £1.8 million refurbishment and rebranding.
The building, formerly known as the Civic Hall, is owned by Stratford Town Trust, but last year a new charitable
trust was formed to run the redeveloped venue. The space hosts theatre, music, visual and performing arts shows as well as other events – organizations can
also hire it privately or use it for meeting spaces.
The refurbishment brought
to life an exciting and modern multi-purpose venue in the heart of the town – boasting new staging, lighting, better
seating and air conditioning, as well as a wonderful new atrium area, idea for exhibitions.
Now, celebrating its first anniversary, the ArtsHouse has a full programme of events from every genre of the arts
– in both the professional world and supporting local community work.

BEAR PIT THEATRE
The Bear Pit Theatre is a little cultural gem in the heart of Stratford.
It was born after the Bear Pit group, which was formed in 2008, fought hard to find a suitable venue to host the
town’s drama societies, musical organisations and visual arts groups, and in 2013 it announced that a partnership with
the United Reformed Church in Rother Street meant that it could open a ‘little theatre’ – a perfect and
versatile space for shows exhibitions, demonstrations, rehearsals and workshops.
Following this the group secured the lease on the space at the back of the church – the result (after much
fundraising by the group) a wonderful studio theatre, a 100-seater, which transforms well for all styles of performance. It
also has its own bar.
Last year Kim Hartman, well known for her role as Private Helga Geerhart in all 96 episodes the iconic
BBC comedy series ‘Allo ‘Allo, accepted the theatre company’s
invitation to become its patron.
